On the 18th, Naver Webtoon announced that it had won the world’s best webtoon application at the 2021 Asia-Pacific Awards (2021 APAC Awards), presented by global mobile data analysis company Sensor Tower.
Sensor Tower looked at how many webtoon apps were downloaded and sold around the world in 2021 and found that Naver Webtoon’s webtoon platforms (Naver Webtoon, WEBTOON, Line Webtoon, and Line Manga) have the highest combined figures.
Among webtoon applications, Naver Webtoon had the most downloads and sales in North America, including the United States.
Beyond Korea, Naver Webtoon distributes popular webtoons to countries worldwide under the names “WEBTOON,” “Line Manga,” and “Line Webtoon” in the United States, Japan, and Southeast Asia. The number of global monthly active users (MAU) reached an all-time high of 82 million last month, and monthly transactions surpassed 100 billion won.
More than 100 countries in ten languages are currently enjoying webtoons via Naver Webtoon’s global platform. In the United States, Generation Z users under the age of 24 account for more than 70% of all users, forming a group of young readers who are enthusiastic about reading and are rapidly growing.
According to Nam Kyung-bo, leader of the Naver Webtoon Strategy Office, Naver Webtoon is building a strong local webtoon ecosystem in the global content market and experiencing steady growth in both platforms and content. “As an industry leader, we will put more effort into expanding overseas markets and increasing our company’s global competitiveness.”
