WEBTOON’s YouTube channel began to share webtoon creators’ stories, and the best-selling author of Lore Olympus, Rachel Smythe, was the first to be featured. In the video, Rachel discussed how she got started as a webtoon creator, how she comes up with her ideas, and what it’s like to make webtoons.
WEBTOON CANVAS Creator Stories – Rachel Smythe
Rachel stated that she “started out on WEBTOON CANVAS” when creating Lore Olympus. CANVAS is WEBTOON’s program that allows webtoon creators to publish their own works online for free. While the creators may be able to monetize their work, the main benefit of participating in the program is the ability to connect with potential readers all over the world through the platform. Once the webtoon has shown its worth through CANVAS, it will be considered for inclusion in the original series, just like Lore Olympus was when it was first made.
The video also showed what it’s like to be a webtoon creator. Rachel admitted to spending “a lot of time floating around in my own imagination.” She is a “fan of going on a really long walk,” and she sometimes wants to stay up until three a.m. creating webtoons, demonstrating her love for Lore Olympus.
“It’s this really beautiful thing because it’s kind of like when you start a project, sometimes you can’t see how good it’s going to be until later,” Rachel explained. This is certainly the case with Lore of Olympus and other webtoons that gained popularity much later than when they were created. Another example could be the recent trend of webtoon dramatization.
Lore of Olympus retells the modern-day romance between the Greek god Persephone and Hades. The webtoon received a lot of love for its unique drawings and storytelling, and it won Digital Book of the Year at the 2021 Harvey Awards.
The first volume of Lore Olympus was released in November 2021 and quickly became a New York Times Best Seller. The second volume is scheduled to be published on July 5, 2022.
