A webtoon depicting the story of students surviving an apocalypse is being adapted into a film. The upcoming film, Concrete Utopia, is based on Kim Soong Nyoong’s webtoon Happy Boy Part 2. From 2014 to 2016, the webtoon was serialized in Lezhin Comics.
Happy Boy Synopsis
Part 1 of Happy Boy takes place in high school. Donghyun, the main character, is an outcast at school and is dubbed “Cow Dung.” He is a student who had been beaten or was beaten for no reason. One day, everyone in the class is cleaning up the underground warehouse under the supervision of the teacher. Then, all of a sudden, there is an earthquake, and everyone is buried. Students offer hope to one another and strive to remain positive in the face of adversity. They expect the rescue team to arrive soon. However, the rescue team doesn’t show up, and each student starts to act in order to stay alive.
Part 2 tells the stories of Donghyun and his classmate Suhyun, who run away from school. When they leave the school, they discover why the rescue team was unable to arrive. The moon appeared to be unusually large. Furthermore, the entire world had been destroyed. They first decide to go to Donghyun’s apartment, located nearby. Surprisingly, only that apartment building survived the earthquake unscathed!
This apartment serves as the setting for the film Concrete Utopia.
Happy Boy Part 2 is also known as “Happy Neighbors.” The residents of the apartment complex band together to survive the apocalypse. They refer to outsiders as “cockroaches” and intend to defend themselves against them. Mr. Kim, the group’s leader, is a former military man who will not hesitate to attack strangers in order to steal food.
Lee Byung-Hun plays a character in the film Concrete Utopia who is very similar to Mr. Kim in the film Concrete Utopia. The other two main characters in the film, played by Park Seo-Joon and Park Bo-Young, do not appear in the webtoon. However, it is expected that those two characters share similarities with Donghyun and Suhyun in the original webtoon.
