Narak, the illustrator of the webtoon “Business Proposal,” talked to Bloter about how the webtoon version of the original novel turned out, as well as what has changed since the webtoon turned into a TV show.
Q. What did you focus on the most while creating the webtoon “Business Proposal”?
Narak: The most important thing was drawing. I had to draw the male protagonist, “Tae-mu,” as a perfect, handsome man, and the female protagonist, “Ha-ri,” as a lovely lady. I also thought that “Sung-hoon” and “Young-seo” should be attractive enough to fall in love at first sight. I literally tried to make a “handsome” face and a “lovely” atmosphere.
Q. When creating a webtoon, it is becoming more common to divide the work between writing and illustration. What was it like working with the original author of the web novel (Haehwa)?
Narak: The author gave me a lot of room during the webtoon adaptation. I spoke with the author about the initial character design. While drawing the characters, I tried to draw the characteristics of the characters in the novel as well as my imagination of their appearances. Fortunately, the original author was pleased with the outcome.
Q. Webtoon-style illustrations can also be found in the first scene of the drama “Business Proposal.”
Narak: I worked on the first episode’s opening scene as well as the SD (Super Deformed) illustration that was inserted in the middle of the drama. I also created an illustration for the final scene, but it was never used.
Q. I’m curious as to how you watched the drama based on web content.
Narak: I had a great time. The sense of humor in the drama “Business Proposal” was just what I was looking for. While watching the drama, I couldn’t stop laughing. Because I was so engrossed in the drama, I forgot I was the webtoon illustrator of “Business Proposal.”
Q. In your opinion, what changes occurred during the drama adaptation?
Narak: There are a lot of different parts from the original work that I can see. However, as long as the main plot remains consistent, I believe it will be enjoyable even if the settings change. In Episode 2, Tae-mu is cleaning up the house while Sung-hoon is relaxing. It was a surprising scene, but I think it’s still appealing.
Another enjoyable aspect of works adapted in various forms, in my opinion, is the similarities and differences between the original novels, webtoons, and dramas. When compared to food, it can be thought of as having a variety of flavors.
Q. Finally, what would you like to say to webtoon readers and drama fans?
Narak: I believe the adaptation process from the webtoon “Business Proposal” to audio dramas and dramas is entirely due to reader enthusiasm. It wasn’t easy to work on, but there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing readers eagerly awaiting and enjoying the update. I want to give readers as much joy as they have given me. I hope they have a good time watching “Business Proposal.”
