In the Netflix series “All of Us Are Dead,” Lee Byeong-chan, a teacher at Hyosan High School, is the one who started the zombie outbreak. Actor Kim Byung-Chul, who plays the role, received quite some attention for playing another villain role after his recent drama “Syphus: The Myth.”
What’s Lee Byeong-chan like in the original webtoon, “All of Us Are Dead”? Let’s see what has changed in the character after the webtoon was turned into a drama.
First, Lee Byeong-chan did not create the virus in the webtoon.
The zombie virus begins in the original webtoon with a mysterious creature that fell on Korea’s east coast. Lee Byeong-chan’s son goes to the sea with his father and becomes infected with the virus by accident. The viruses can be compared to uncontrollable natural disasters.
In the drama, on the other hand, Lee Byeong-chan creates the virus himself and injects it into his son. With the hope that his son, who was subjected to school violence on a daily basis, would become a little stronger, Lee Byeong-chan used his specialty, biology, to create viruses. Contrary to his expectations, the son suffers from serious side effects such as losing his mind, having red eyes, and displaying strong aggression.
While Lee Byeong-chan is working on a vaccine for his son, a student is bitten by a virus-experimental mouse. That is when the zombie virus starts to spread.
Second, Lee Byeong-chan is a character who suffers from guilt and shame in the original work.
Lee Byeong-chan’s son, who transformed into a zombie in a webtoon, attacks his mother, and Lee Byeong-chan witnesses the attack. Lee Byeong-chan blames himself, imprisons his son, and buries his zombie-bite wife.
He conducts a number of experiments to treat his son, who has turned into a zombie. Initially, experimental mice are used, and later, he asks a homeless person on the street to conduct biological tests. In the webtoon, Lee Byeong-chan appears to be consistently in pain and blaming himself for what he has done throughout the process.
In contrast to the original work, Lee Byeong-chan in the drama is enraged by society. He claims he issued hundreds of warnings and that no one responded to him. He places the blame for the zombie incident on someone other than himself.
Third, the death of Lee Byeong-chan
Lee Byeong-chan in the webtoon continues to regret and suffer as a result of his actions, eventually committing suicide. In his suicide note, he details all of the crimes he committed. Lee Byeong-chan has struggled to accept the disasters that have befallen him since the beginning of the story.
In the drama “All of Us Are Dead,” Lee Byeong-chan does not show much of his regrets. Rather, he wishes for the abolition of the world that has made him miserable.
