Q: You’ve probably never dealt with the subject of “Hope or Dope.” How did you approach acting in the role when you couldn’t recall it from memory?
Yoon Chan-Young: True, I’ve never seen drugs in my life. Drugs are distributed in the underworld, but there is information available. While looking for information about what was going on with it, I became aware of drug use. In addition, I did a lot of marijuana research.
Yoon Chan-Young: Yoon-tak attempts to solve the problem on his own, but things worsen as he struggles. While enduring and enduring, he reaches a point where he can no longer bear it. When you realize that things can get worse, you may believe that your life is going really bad.
Q: A character such as Yoon-tak may be difficult to play because he is a model student with no distinct personality. Following “All of Us Are Dead,” you took on another challenging role.
Yoon Chan-Young: At first, I thought Yoon-tak was a very nice person, but after rereading the script, I changed my mind. Even if a person was born a nice person, he or she may one day throw things or become irrationally angry. As a result, when I played Yoon-tak, I tried not to limit him to a single personality. At different times, he acts like a mother, a fox, and a sloppy person. It is a character who varies greatly depending on the point of view.
Q: According to director Lee Jae-kyu of “All of Us Are Dead,” Yoon Chan-Young has an acting style of “talking slowly and responding slowly.” Therefore, I believe you would have worked well in dramas like “Hope or Dope.” I’m sure it can also be a strength as an actor.
Yoon Chan-Young: Even when eating a meal, it is advised to eat slowly. Sometimes it takes a long time for me to organize my thoughts and express them in words. Slow isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, I can say the words quickly if I have to. I enjoy rapping, as I demonstrated on an entertainment show the other day. (Laughter) My personality has calmed down since I began my acting career as a child, and it has become a habit for me to think a lot before speaking. I believe that my calmness can be a motivator for playing deeper roles.
Q: Can you tell me about your acting plans for the future?
Yoon Chan-Young: I’m currently reading the scripts. I’m hoping that for my next film, I’ll be able to use everything I’ve learned and learn new things. If there is a really good script, I want to give it my all and create a really good piece of work.
