In this post, we will look at the top five webtoon original films in Korea based on box office success.
Start-Up is a film based on the same-named webtoon by author Jo Geum-San. It was released in 2019 and had a total audience of 3.31 million people in Korea’s box office.
There was no major attention on the first day of the film’s release. Then it gradually went viral and steadily gathered an audience to overcome the break-even point and hit the box office.
The actors’ delicate performances and high synchronization rate with the original characters were well received.
There was a distinction between the original webtoon and the film. The film Start-Up is a light comedy, whereas the original webtoon Start-Up could be a sad story.
Moss is a 2010 film that was based on a webtoon by Yoon Tae-ho and had a total audience of 3.5 million viewers.
Prior to the release of Moss in 2010, it was uncommon to adapt webtoons into films. Moss was one of the first webtoons to be adapted into a film, which piqued the interest of webtoon fans.
Moss received positive feedback from both fans of the webtoon and those who did not read it. As a result, it outperformed expectations and became a box office success.
3. Secretly, Greatly
Secretly, Greatly, a 2013 film, is based on author Hun’s webtoon of the same name. The film drew a total of 6.95 million viewers.
At the time of its release, critics reacted negatively. However, due to the appearance of popular actors such as Kim Soo-Hyun and Park Ki-Woong, the number of viewers increased by half a million on the first day of its release.
Many controversies arose, but in the end, it drew a large audience and was so well received that it was later adapted into a musical.
2. Inside Men
Inside Men is a movie based on the webtoon of writer Yoon Tae-ho that was released in 2015. The film drew 7.07 million viewers in total.
The film tells the stories of political organizations and the media from behind the scenes. Surprisingly, similar events occurred in Korea following the film’s release.
Inside Men drew a lot of attention due to the outstanding acting abilities of actors such as Lee Byung-hun and Cho Seung-woo. The soundtrack also complements the mood of the film. Because the film contains violence, it was not made available to teenagers.
After exceeding 5 million viewers in the box office, the director’s edition was released with the title Inside Men: The Original. The director’s cut brought in an additional 3 million viewers to the box office.
1. Along with the Gods
Along with the Gods is a movie based on the webtoon of writer Joo Ho-min. Along with the Gods is the most successful webtoon-based movie, with over 10 million viewers.
The first film in the series, Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, was released in 2017 and recorded 14.4 million viewers. The second film, All with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, was released in 2018 and received 12.27 million viewers.
When the teaser video was released prior to the movie release, the reaction was mixed, as some of the main characters from the original work did not appear at all. Furthermore, the plot diverged slightly from the original. However, due to its high level of CG and the acting abilities of the main actors, it achieved phenomenal results, ranking fifth in Korean box office sales ever.
