“We are discussing seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game with Netflix,” said director Hwang Dong-hyuk in an interview with KBS News Line on December 28th.
According to Hwang, the production time for the next season of Squid Game may be shorter than industry expectations. “I know many people are waiting,” the director said, “so everyone is working hard to prepare for the next season.”
During a KBS interview and an interview with CNN in October, the director revealed three things that may appear in Squid Game Season 2.
1. The main plot of Season 2 is the story of the people Gi-Hun meets and the people he pursues.
In the final episode of Squid Game Season 1, Gi-Hun appeared to be on his way somewhere when he decided not to board a plane. Season 2 will reveal who Gi-Hun will meet and how he will track down the squid game organizers.
Although the identity of the Front Man was revealed in season 1, it is unclear why he was promoted from a Squid Game participant to the Front Man. Season 2 is expected to include the story of the Front Man and his younger brother, who was shot by him.
3. Salesman (Gong Yoo) is another character who was not explained in season 1, and the director wishes to discuss him.
Gong Yoo, a well-known actor who has appeared in Train to Busan, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, and The Silent Sea, drew attention in Season 1 of the Squid Game by playing the Salesman. Although the Salesman has relatively few appearances, however, he is the one who first introduced Gi-Hun to the Squid Game and then reappeared to prevent Gi-Hun from forgetting about it. Season 2 is expected to include an episode about the Salesman.
The director commented that he expects to see an outcome for Squid Game Season 2 soon. The exact release date for Squid Game Season 2 has not yet been announced.
