On January 25th, the magazine GQ Korea published an interview with Seohyun. Seohyun discusses her recent work as well as personal changes in the interview. We have included the translation of part of the interview below:
GQ: We meet again after a year, and I believe your personality has grown more active in the interim. It appears that expressing yourself is not difficult anymore.
SH: Are you sure?
GQ: Without a doubt, perhaps it’s because you have appeared in a number of films in the interim. Three works will be released this year, including the Netflix film Love and Leashes, the drama The Jinx’s Lovers, and the film Holy Night: Demon Hunters. How do you feel about waiting for upcoming films?
SH: I think the most exciting part is the anticipation. These three films are still something only the staff and I are aware of. I’m hoping the work will be released soon because I want to share it with as many people as possible.
GQ: Love and Leashes begin with the discovery of a secret. Do you have many secrets to tell, Seohyun?
SH: There are a lot of things that my friends have revealed to me while saying, “It’s a secret.” I also have a lot of secrets that I have shared with my friends. But, as soon as I say it, it’s no longer a secret, right? I don’t believe there is any such thing as a secret in the world.
GQ: I expected you to have a lot of hidden secrets. Because you are a perfectionist.
SH: I’m not going to be able to hide it. I don’t have to hide it, and I believe it’s better not to. It’s difficult to keep up the work if you’re feeling uneasy about your secrets.
GQ: Is there anything you don’t like about yourself?
SH: Yes, but it exists because I am a human being. I try to love the parts of me that I sometimes dislike myself.
GQ: I believe you have tried to change the part of yourself that you didn’t like about yourself.
SH: That’s right. But as I became more accepting of myself, I naturally accepted my hateful self. When I was younger, I had a narrow perspective. Now I believe that if you only focus on one thing, you will miss out on many other valuable things around you. There is only one life, and I frequently consider why I live. I don’t want to live for the sake of honor or material possessions.
GQ: Did those shifts in your thinking alter your perception of the characters in the films?
SH: I think so. There have been times when I’ve thought to myself, “If I were this character, I wouldn’t act like this.” Now I have the impression that my thinking has broadened. Love and Leases is also a departure from the typical romantic comedy. If you only read the description, you might think Jung Ji-Woo is a very unique character. However, from a broader perspective, I believed that there may be many people who have similar personalities to her. As a result, I was eager to try out for the role.
GQ: How do you feel about your role as Seul-Bi in The Jinx’s Lover?
SH: Seul-Bi is the character who is closest to me right now. Seulbi faces a certain fate, and she is a brave person who lives in defiance of that fate. I also have a similar feeling because I have a personality that challenges rather than conforms.
