Ahn Hyo-Seop portrayed Kang Tae-moo, the third-generation CEO of a conglomerate, in “Business Proposal.” In an interview following the completion of the drama, he discusses what made him play the role and how he prepared for it. He also talked about when Kang Tae-moo fell in love with Shin Ha-ri for the first time and what was going through Kang Tae-moo’s mind.
Q. What made you want to play Kang Tae-moo?
Ahn Hyo-Seop: To be honest, I didn’t think of anything when I first read the script. It also means that I can read the script without worrying much about the role. That was enough to convince me to take the job.
I wanted to be in those interesting situations where Kang Tae-moo was placed, and I wanted to test my comedic abilities. Kang Tae-moo was also more appealing to me because he does not have a light personality.
Q. How did you prepare for the role of “Kang Tae-moo?”
Kang Tae-moo’s first impression of the script was “unrealistic.”I thought about how I could show this person who only exists in a cartoon.
It took me a long time to come up with Kang Tae-moo’s voice. To make Kang Tae-moo appealing to the audience, I thought I needed to have a distinct tone of voice.
Q. What makes the character “Kang Tae-moo” so appealing?
Tae-moo’s most endearing feature, in my opinion, is his boyish character. On the outside, he appears to be a cold, sharp city man, but on the inside, there is a boy who hasn’t grown up because he didn’t have the opportunity to be loved by his parents. Maybe that’s why he’s striving for the perfect life—to fill that void in his mind.
Tae-moo begins to discover his true self when he meets Ha-ri, a never-before-seen character. As he encounters childish fights or pure love that he has never known, he begins to change. This, I believe, was the most interesting and appealing aspect of playing him.
Q. In which scene did Kang Tae-moo first fall in love?
At the playground, Ha-ri was talking on the phone with Tae-moo. Drunk Ha-ri talks to the students, the phone is disconnected, and Tae-moo runs outside in search of a location where Ha-ri is likely to be. He was running around, worried about Ha-ri.
When Tae-moo returned to a normal state, he thought, “I can have this much emotion for someone.” For the first time, he realized, “I can be shaken this much for someone.”
Q. Did Kang Tae-moo and Shin Ha-ri have any concerns about work and love while dating at work?
Kang Tae-moo is the type of person who can distinguish between work and life outside of work.
Despite the fact that Tae-moo and Ha-ri work at the same company, Tae-moo’s attitude toward work has not changed. Tae-moo is a boss who makes decisions and accepts responsibility while remaining calm. On the other hand, when Tae-moo is in a relationship, he goes with the emotion that comes from his heart.
When Tae-moo, who had to travel to America because his grandfather was ill, asked Ha-ri to accompany him, Ha-ri chose to remain in Korea. Both of them are passionate about their work, and Tae-moo must have chosen to travel alone to the United States because he respects, trusts, and understands Ha-ri.
Q. What if Kang Tae-moo met Jin Young Seo on a blind date instead of Shin Ha-ri?
As you know, based on the personalities of Jin Young-seo and Kang Tae-moo, I believe it would have been a very short meeting in which they agreed right away not to date each other.
Q. What do you think you’d say to Kang Tae-moo?
Tae-moo! It’s strange. Instead, I believe I should address him as “Mr. Tae-moo Kang.”
Mr. Tae-moo Kang! You’re the type of person who deserves to be loved, so I hope you can share that love with Ha-ri and be happy for a long time.
