Following the post regarding webtoon creators’ income, we will discuss the challenges that webtoon writers face, based on a survey conducted by the Korea Content Promotion Agency.
The survey found that 85.4% of webtoon writers in Korea are frequently pressed for time and have little time to unwind. Furthermore, 85.1% of creators reported mental and physical health deterioration as a result of excessive work. Moreover, three out of every four (76.2%) identified the difficulty as uncertain income and financial difficulties while preparing for the next project.
Furthermore, nearly half (49%) of writers cited profit-sharing disagreements with platforms/agencies. 43% of webtoon writers cited the stress of malicious comments as a challenge.
Webtoons are mostly serialized online, as opposed to manga and comics, which are often serialized in magazines. As a result, the creators have relatively easy access to the comments of the readers. The webtoon comments are frequently found at the bottom of each episode.
According to the survey, approximately 62.1% of creators reported receiving malicious comments on a regular basis. Two out of every three people (67.3%) reported feeling stressed while reading the comments. The creators mentioned that criticism of the work (76%) and insulting the writer (15%) are among the comments that make them feel stressed the most.
One out of every five creators polled said they never read the comments.
